Poverty and Profit in the American City

Our friend Roger Baylor at the NA Confidential blog directed our attention to this: From Harvard sociologist Matthew Desmond, a landmark work of scholarship and reportage that will forever change the way we look at poverty in America – Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City.

To borrow a phrase from Timothy Hallinan’s fictional character, Junior Bender: “It’s one of the legal crimes that transfer the world’s wealth from shallow pockets to deep ones, twenty-four hours a day.”

Barbara Ehrenreich, in the New York Times, said,”The burden of Evicted, Matthew Desmond’s astonishing book, is to show that the world [Lamar] inhabits is indeed hell, or as close an approximation as you are likely to find in a 21st-century American city.”
